Hollywood actor Sean Bean swapped the silver screen for football management as he returned to his Sheffield roots to lead a legends team to victory.
Over 4,000 fans turned out at Bramall Lane for the charity football match on Sunday that saw Sean Bean manage a team of Sheffield United Legends against a Fulham All Stars side.
The game, which ended in a penalty shootout win for the Blades Legends, saw TV star Jack Whitehall captain a Fulham team which included the likes of former players Barry Hayles and Rufus Brevett as well as soap star Chris Fountain, George Gilbey from the hit UK TV show Gogglebox, and Harley Sylvestre from UK hip-hop duo, Rizzle Kicks - the Fulham All Stars man-of-the-match.
Returning to Bramall Lane to play for Sheffield United’s legends team were many of the 2005/06 Blades side which gained promotion to the Premier League.
Chris Morgan - the Blades Legends man-of-the-match - Brian Deane, Tony Agana, Michael Brown, Bob Booker, Carl Asaba, Alan Quinn, Rob Kozluk, Alan Wright, Jon Harley, Leigh Bromby, Richard Cresswell, Michael Tonge, and another Blades former captain in David Holdsworth all took part in the game.
Blades Legends manager Sean Bean said: “It’s been great everybody - it’s good to see all the players in the dressing room, I was even a bit starstruck.
“It was good, I had a really nice day and I thought it was a good game, especially the second half as it was quite competitive for a friendly.
“They were a great crowd and we had some fantastic support and it’s obviously for a very good charity.
“There were some very good penalties at the end too - I’d have taken one myself but I hadn’t brought my boots.”
Sheffield United Operations Director, Dave McCarthy said: “I’m extremely grateful to everyone who took part - I’m sure the success of this event will lead to more occasions like it in the future.”
The charity game was held in aid of The Sheffield United Community Foundation, the Fulham Football Club Foundation, Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids charity, the Steelphalt Blades Academy and the Blades’ Former Players Association.
