THE ISLAND
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi, and Djimon Hounsou; directed by Michael Bay (Dreamworks, July 22)
"It's a lot different from my other movies in that they've always started with a bang," director Michael Bay (Armageddon, Bad Boys 1 and 2) says of his sci-fi thriller. "This is one of those movies where you need 15 minutes to get all the twists, and then the audience is going to be like, 'What the fuck is going on?'" Set in the not-so-distant future, The Island follows the travails of Lincoln (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan (Scarlett Johansson), who, unbeknownst to them, were birthed and are living in a cloning facility. When Lincoln wins a lottery, he thinks he's set for life on the planet's only remaining pollution-free spot -- but he soon discovers that it's all been a cruel deception, and that the sponsor who cloned him needs one of his vital body parts. "It seems we're getting closer and closer to being able to clone humans, so it is a little scary," says Steve Buscemi, who plays a non-cloned human who befriends Lincoln and Jordan. "I want people to walk out this movie saying, "If you could, would you buy a clone?'" says Bay. "Becuse if you could extend your life, most people probably would."
