Upcoming remake "The Hitcher" has gained a great villain, in the form of the brilliant actor, Sean Bean.
Bean will be playing the same role that was made famous by Rutger Hauer in the original, that of the crazy hitcher!

"The Hitcher" was probably one of the most under rated chillers of the 80's and we have to admit we don't think a remake could top it. However by casting Bean, they have at least made a good choice in terms of the villain, if nothing else!

A NEW HITCHER HITCHES IN
By Dave Davis

I suddenly feel better about the new but probably still completely unnecessary remake of The Hitcher. "Why?" you may ask. "I'll tell you," I would answer. And then tell you.
It's because it would take someone with just the right combination of charismatic and sociopathic to replace the original's Rutger Hauer, and the filmmakers have come pretty close with their selection for the wandering loon: Sean Bean.
Bean will be understandably stalking One Tree Hill hottie Sophia Bush (begin all the "chasing some Bush" jokes at your leisure) in the update of the 1986 cult classic. The story involves good-looking young people who mistakenly pick up a hitchhiker who turns out to be precisely that reason mom told you not to pick up hitchhikers.
Bean's had lots of villain practice already (Patriot Games, Ronin, Don't Say a Word, National Treasure, The Island, Goldeneye, etc.) but US viewers can catch his more heroic side in the seemingly endless British war series of Sharpe's films, which BBC America just recently started showing.
The new Hitcher flick comes from Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes and Rogue Pictures, with commercial/music vid guy Dave Meyers shooting Jake Wade Wall's script.

Sean Bean is The Hitcher

From the school of unneeded horror remakes comes the soon-to-be-shooting The Hitcher, which in fact is being made by the house of unneeded horror remakes, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror). But The Hitcher has just gotten a bit more interesting thanks to the news that Sean Bean has been cast to play the titular baddie.
Bean, who plays a good bad guy for sure (Patriot Games, Goldeneye, etc.), but isn’t given the chance to play a good good guy often enough, will be filling the role originally played by Rutger Hauer in the 1986 film. Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill) will take on, I guess, the C. Thomas Howell part from the original, which is kind of weird when you think about it. Music video director Dave Meyers helms the Eric Bernt screenplay.
Actually, in this version there are two victim characters, Bush and a male traveling companion of hers. The latter role has yet to be cast, though I’m sure Mr. Howell is available…
And because he's so lovely when he's bad...
The cult purists may be up at arms, but I think most people are pretty damned please with this casting. ^_^ Here's hoping.
